Having difficulty losing weight?

Obesity is one of the nation’s fastest-growing and most troubling health problems.  If you have a very high body mass index (BMI)-that is, your weight is significantly more than what is generally considered healthy for your height- you may be increasing the risk of many serious health conditions, including hypertension, heart disease and stroke, Type 2 diabetes, gallbladder disease, chronic fatigue, asthma, sleep apnea and some forms of cancer.

The causes of obesity are rarely limited to genetic factors, prolonged overeating, or a sedentary lifestyle.  What we do and don’t do often results from how we think and feel.  When we are feeling stressed we often eat more than usual.  Unless you address your stressors this short-term coping strategy can lead to long-term problems.

According to The American Psychological Association Obesity is also frequently accompanied by depression and the two can trigger and influence each other.

Did you know that women are slightly more at risk for having an unhealthy BMI than men and are much more vulnerable to the obesity-depression cycle?  In one study, obesity in women was associated with a 37% increase in major depression.  There is also a strong relationship between women with a high BMI and more frequent thought of suicide per the APA.

Depression can both cause and result from stress, which in turn, may cause you to change your eating and activity habits.  Many people who have difficulty recovering from sudden or emotionally draining events unknowingly begin eating too much of the wrong foods or forgoing exercise.  Before long, these become habits and habits are difficult to change.

What can you do?
Dealing with obesity and weight-control problems requires adopting new habits that foster a healthier lifestyle.  Also, it is important you identify and reduce the stressors in your life that promote obesity and weight-control.  Losing weight does not need to be difficult.  To increase your success you may wish to consider a team approach that involves several qualified health professionals.  Your physician will help you choose a safe plan for losing weight involving diet and exercise.  A psychologist can help you with the emotional side to help you address any emotional challenges you are experiencing such as possible depression.  At Natural Wellness Care you assist you in reducing your stressors, the roadblocks for weight loss, and also offer proven weight loss programs to help you take off those unwanted pounds and keep them off!
